| Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) |
|
| A TEE is a special ultrasound done at the hospital. Prior to the procedure, you will be given medication through an IV line to help you relax. Then, your throat will be sprayed with an anesthetic to numb it. Next, a flexible tube is inserted into your mouth and down your esophagus (food pipe). At the tip of the tube is a small probe that produces sound waves. These sound waves bounce off your heart and are changed into pictures on a video screen. These images help the doctor identify problems with your heart’s chambers or valves. |

| Preparation: No food or drink 6 hours prior to the procedure. Take any prescribed medications with a sip of water only. Arrange to have a friend or family member drive you home. |
