  Hyperlipidemia
Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol)

Cholesterol is a type of fat found in our bodies.  Our livers make cholesterol and we also get cholesterol from the foods we eat.  It’s normal to have cholesterol, as it’s an important part of a healthy body.  However, when cholesterol levels become too high, you can get a build up of plaque in your blood vessels.  Plaque is made of cholesterol and other materials circulating in your blood.  As more plaque builds up, your arteries can narrow and stiffen.  Eventually, enough plaque may build up to reduce blood flow through your arteries.  This increases your risk of heart attack, stroke and other vascular disorders.

Because hyperlipidemia usually doesn’t cause symptoms, you will need a blood test for a diagnosis.  The blood test will show your physician the levels of different lipids in your blood.  Your physician will compare your results to established ranges.  The ranges will help your physician diagnose hyperlipidemia and then decide whether you will need diet and exercise modification, medications or both as treatments.

The more risk factors for heart disease you have, the more aggressively your physician will treat hyperlipidemia.  If you already have a diagnosis of coronary artery disease (blockages in the heart arteries) or peripheral artery disease (blockages in your neck, arm, abdominal or leg arteries), your doctor will recommend a very aggressive approach to lowering your cholesterol levels.
