  Chemical Stress Test
Chemical Stress Test (Adenosine Stress Test)
A chemical stress test is performed when you are unable to exercise on the treadmill.  Some patients are unable to exercise due to problems walking, joint pain or an abnormal baseline EKG.  In these instances, a chemical (adenosine) is given to increase blood flow to the heart so that we can take pictures similar to those taken after exercise.  The drug is slowly injected into your bloodstream through an IV and the infusion takes approximately six minutes.  The chemical stress test protocol is the exact same as the nuclear stress test protocol (above) with the exception of the drug being given in place of exercising on the treadmill.
